Breaking: Premier League clubs vote to block rich ownership deals

English Premier League clubs have voted to temporarily block teams from signing lucrative sponsorship deals after the takeover of rich owners.

The action follows soon after the Saudi Arabia-backed £305m takeover of Newcastle to make the Magpies the richest club in the world. While Newcastle were now due to strike new sponsorship deals.

"The hostility among Premier League clubs to the Newcastle United takeover was underlined on Monday when they voted through legislation designed to prevent the Saudi owners from striking lucrative sponsorship deals," the Guardian reported.

Out of the Premier League’s 20 clubs, 18 clubs voted in favour of the ban at an emergency meeting that was held this week.

Without surprise, Newcastle voted against, while Manchester City abstained. Both clubs questioned the legality of the move.
