Kylian Mbappe has taken over as France captain from the retired Hugo Lloris, according to a source close to the team on Monday.
Mbappe, 24, of Paris Saint-Germain, accepted the offer after discussions with coach Didier Deschamps earlier in the day. Hugo Lloris of Tottenham ended his international career in January after losing the World Cup final a month earlier. Lloris, 36, had been captain for over a decade.
After Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane retired following the defeat to Argentina in December, Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann was named vice-captain. Mbappe, who has 66 caps for his country, has been heavily linked with the role for weeks and scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final defeat after helping Les Bleus win the title in 2018.
The former Monaco attacker is PSG's vice-captain behind Brazil's Marquinhos and led the team in the defender's absence against Rennes on Sunday. His first game as captain will be against the Netherlands on Friday at the Stade de France.
